1. Migaloo and Orca ~ Edition 1/1 @ 77 tz
In this painting the orca represents danger. Migaloo senses the danger and gets out of the way.
I am an artist who lives on the English coast. But, when I lived on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia, I would walk my dog on the beach most days after lunch. I saw so many whales in 2013 year, I thought it was about time I painted them.
While doing my research online about humpback whales I came across something really inspiring.
On 28th June 1991, an all-white whale was photographed passing Byron Bay, Australia's most easterly point. Named Migaloo by the indigenous community in Queensland ("White Fella"), at the time the whale was the only documented all-white humpback whale in the world.
For me Migaloo is symbolic of the vulnerability of the humpback population. This series of paintings focused on Migaloo, tells the story of his journey up and down the coast. Orca's feed on the newborn calves, preferring the tongue, each season as the pods travel back to their southern ocean home.
Since 2013 Migaloo, whales and other crustacea have become a symbol in my work for all living creatures and the fragility of the environment.
2. Albino Whale Calf Breaching ~ Edition 1/1 @ 77 tz
I paint whales to highlight the need for us to take care of our oceans and the creatures who live in them. The beauty of something quite so rare as an albino Humpback calf puts focus on the fragility of ocean life by focussing on the individual not the pod of indistinguishable humpbacks.
By looking after one we look after them all. Nothing lives in isolation.
3. Red Sunrise Under The Pier ~ Edition of 1/3 @ 27 tz
Waking early and setting out to watch the sunrise is one of the great joys of living on the eastern seaboard.
I'm even more fortunate to live near the only leisure pier left in Kent. Walking under the pier the intertwining shapes go this way and that as the dark pillars angle against the colours of the sunrise. As the sun rises the sea settles and shimmers. A moment of peace before the day begins.
I love the abstract shapes the pillars holding up the Pier make against the horizon. Everyday is different because so much changes, the tides, the clouds, the sunrise. Always something different, and occasionally the sun is red!
3. Shingles and Clouds ~ Edition of 1/3 @ 27 tz
I paint seascapes that evoke human emotions. In this painting you can see a split between the turmoil in the clouds in the sky and the calm clear water gently lapping the shingles.
We can exist in a space of calm while there is turmoil going on around us. It's not easy but it is possible. Human emotions are complex, in this painting I am referencing nature as a visual aid to understanding our emotions.
